I went to the auto store this evening and was going to buy some transmission fluid... I thought I could get like Vavoline, but the guy in there informed me that for 01+ hondas... I need a specific kind that is made by honda (or another brand that puts some type of z1 formula or something)... Q1 is this true? .... And he said that if I have been putting the regular Vavoline in there, it could cause the transmission to slip...

Q2.. Now, i been taking it to a regular oil change shop for the trans fluid changes and they put the regular Vavoline in it, so if my tranny has begun to slip, could they be responsible for this?

I'm going to call honda the honda dealer tomorrow to find out, was just wondering if anyone else knew about this... Thanks!

Thanks... It says all cars are 29.99... They never charge extra for the "additives" .. Just the 30 bucks... Its only been worked on at the one same place... So hopefully I figure it all out, b/c I feel they should be resposible for it if they were not putting the correct trans fluid in it. I sure dont know too much about cars, they're the mechanics.. hehe. Thanks people.

the guy at the parts store is right. all 01 and up hondas require
honda only fluid. they also have a few different types of fluids
since not all of their automatic transmissions operate the same
way. honda specific fluid is only avaliable at the dealer so it may
be somewhat pricey but that is alot cheaper than fixing a damaged trans. they will be able to provide the right one for
your car as well as diagnose what is causing the slipping
in your tranny. for question #2 if valvoline serviced your transmission with their brand of fluid and it did not slip before they
serviced it they are responsible for any damage caused.
most oil change centers do carry a line of additives to convert
a regular dextron3 type fluid to other types but they may not have
used the right one or one at all. not all transmission fluids are the same nor are all additives/converters the same or neccesarly
the right one.

Yes, Call Honda, and they will advise you that they indeed do use a special transmission oil.
That said, most QUALITY (e.g. NAPA, Carquest etc) parts stores sell a "friction modifier" product approved by Honda that will make Dexron/Mercon III the equivalent to their Honda oil. It runs about $14.50 per bottle, and I imagine that is what the oil change shop has been using.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Get it flushed quick. If the shops did not charge you extra for trans fluid then yes it has ATF DEX/MERCRON in it. Big no no for HONDA. The HONDA fluid is expensive they would have charged more. Stay away from econ franchise $7.00 per hour mechanic shops. Read about how to pick a shop here http://painintheexhaust.blogspot.com
