+ The profile of a teaching professional has two things that need emphasis. The first is communication skills (all forms) touch listen and see etc. as everyone learns best from different stimulus. The second is subject matter mastery.
It is totally unimportant to have any diversity if the first two criteria are present. It should be based entirely on performance of the first two criteria. Then sex, creed and color should play no part in the decision of who teaches.

I guess it all comes down to whether or not you think teachers benefit society. I would assume that most people care about the education their children are receiving, and I think that would go across political parties. And let's face it, most people don't want to be treated like dirt, working hard to provide a good service while getting little support from the community and a miserable paycheck. If you want to attract good educators (or any teachers for that matter), you have to show some appreciation for them to want to work at your school. Besides all that, teachers already make squat. It never was a lucrative profession. You'll be sadly mistaken if you go into teaching for the next flat screen and brand new car!

Unfortunately the profile of the teaching profession is a lot lower than it ought to be, probably because it benefits any government to have an under-educated populace (it makes people easier to control).

It's important to recruit diverse teachers because not only will children get a variety of viewpoints from various teachers, but the teachers themselves will have a better understanding of social issues affecting their students if they have colleagues from that background.
