I found that a fine mesh still had the suction to pull in my fish. what i did was cut a sponge and place that over it. you can also raise the intake a little. the higher you raise it the less water it pulls in. The sponge is also a great pre filter. Just change it when it gets gunky

There is no reason for a goldfish to get stuck on a filter. A filter in take is not THAT strong, even small slow fish can swim by a filter intake and not get stuck.
Only sick or dead fish are weak enough to get stuck. This is likely the case here.
I can't presume to know how many goldfish you have in what sized tank, but do know that goldfish, being huge ammonia producers and poop machines, require large tanks. The small fancies require 20 gallons of water each, and larger goldies like koi, comets, commons, require ponds.
There is an underlying cause to your goldfish getting stuck on the filter. Do they have any symptoms of sickness, such as clamped fins, white spots, fuzzy stuff, bloating, etc?

Please look into it. As I say, it's not normal.

the good ol' panty hose trick works fine. Cut up a old pair of hose and put it over the intake. Though, keep an eye on the water coming out of the filter. I didn't know what was going on, but my water was not coming out very fast and there wasn't a lot of it coming out of the filter. The panty hose acts as a "pre-filter" and gets cloggeg. Just take it out and wash it in some hot water.

Hope that helped!

Put a fine mesh filter over it, an old tea strainer works fine

Take a piece of panty hose...and attach it to the end where the fish are going into, with a rubber-band to hold it on there.

I've had to do this in the past.....and it worked, with 'flying colors' !

Good luck

I like to mix a little Elmer's glue with the charcoal filter. The scent of the glue will keep the goldfish away. Sometimes they die though.

No, don't do it you will prevent perfect Darwanism from taking place in your tank, it is survival of the fittest.
