First, when the country modernizes agriculture it replaces the most of the people used to work the fields. Add in, imported agricultural products the whole population gets cheaper food overall, yet you have a mass of people that were for centuries working small plots making income off working the plot driven out of business; as a result, those poor farmers without other jobs to take up the displacement of people they will migrate to the urban areas, and if they do find work its usually very poor pay, and end up living in shacks like you see in Latin America. Yet, the problem is how do you try to keep these farmers working. Its a catch 22 question. Its not so simple as people think, they think subsides drove these poor farmers under or free-trade, partly yes, but also majority of the time big land owners in those countries mechaninze or modernize their own plots that could produce on one small ploy 6 times more than the small plot Farmer. Its a complex question actually, I'm sure someone probably come up with better answer.
