I was just wondering why is it that when I ask a question, one person will assume a fact that I never stated. It takes one person, then others follow and jump on the band wagon. Like I asked a question about mental illness, stated my mother was mentally ill for 20 years. Why is it the first person answered my question assumed she was not on medication for her condition. Like duh! Who would not be taking medication for years? I mentioned I believe in God, and healing. Just about everyone assumed I don't believe in medical treatment. I never said that. It was assumed

It's like people want to make other people look ignorant.

I don't check other people's answers first before answering a question myself. I feel that doing so would indeed cause my thoughts to be swayed perhaps to their point of view. I only answer a question if I feel I have something of value to offer the asker. If I've gone through a similar experience in my own life or something like that. It's always best to answer with your gut instinct rather than searching through others answers to compose your own thoughts. Maybe others will read my answer now and TAKE NOTE!

I don't think they're trying to make people look ignorant. I think the problem is that there's limited space to state a question, and people feel they have to "read between the lines." Sometimes what they're assuming is right, and sometimes wrong. If there was the capability to ask questions back and forth, misconceptions could be avoided, but this is what we have to work with. As for those who do try to make others feel bad, guess we just have to put up with them and try not to take it personally.

I think people want to be as informative as possible.
Don't hate me, but it appears you may have needed to frame your question about your mother a little differently.
Specifically, it's assumed (rightly or wrongly) that, if someone were getting treated properly by medication, they wouldn't be ill for 20 years. Plenty of people are mentally ill and refuse treatment -- classically they take the meds for a while, fell better, believe they are healed and stop taking the meds.

You are right, a lot of people "assume", as for me, I'm going to be (read) more careful in the future. I don't think most people who answer questions on here are trying to make you or others look ignorant, they like me are just trying to help. Thank you for bringing this up.

I think any question even when stated clearly can always be open to interpretation. I think how someone interprets a question can say more about them than the answer they give. I don't think people deliberately set out to make someone else look ignorant they just misunderstand the question.
