Well, it's hard to get any more "inside" than the OFFICIAL story -- that a disgruntled, angry former CIA operative named Osama bin Laden organized the whole thing. Personally, I think Al Qaeda had penetrated the U.S. military establishment, and knew in advance that there was going to be an 'anti-hijacking" exercise that day, so they were able to have their first crucial minutes undisturbed ("it's only part of the drill"). The U.S. government put up all those weird stories as a smokescreen to avoid admitting that it was an even -bigger- intelligence failure than it looked like. Or, it's possible that it was like the first World Trade Center bombing, where the FBI and ATF had infiltrated the group, had imposters in the group urging the action, provided explosives and supplies, and even pushed when some participants were talking about backing out. A number of pretty nasty scenarios that do not reflect well on the U.S. government are possible -without- ever saying anyone in, say, Langley, Virginia, actually did it. Something's fishy. .
