I'm American, and when I started studying German in August, I was appalled that Germans call each other by Herr and Frau for years.

I speak Spanish, and after 5 minutes, everyone is your amigo. Though I understand that in the asian languages you pay deference to your elders for eternity.

And the Japanese refer to each other by their last name except in the most intimate of relationships.

I guess because our culture is diverse, getting familar with new acquaintances is almost a survival mechanism.

it used to be customary in english - and america - to refer to thers in such a manner as well - miss emily or sir edmund etc - in polite society that is..
