garter belt

It is Lins, as some others have said, tape, a garter belt, or the shorts/pants with velcro.

Sometimes, especially in pickup hockey where we don't care what the shinguard coverings look like, we just use jogging pants big enough to go over the shinguards and then nothing is needed.

I have heard the hockey socks also called hockey hoes which is kind of funny.

The garters, by the way, have metal clips on the end. That is what holds up the socks when a garter is used. Sometimes they just clip like a department store close hanger does for pants. Others have a sort of button that you push through the female part of the clip with the sock in between.
