They don't use a special protein- they are made of fragments of bone marrow cells and have no nuclei.

These are 3 basic stages in the clotting process: (13 altogether)
Stage 1 - Platelets + damaged cells -> thromboplastin which initiates the event
Stage 2 - Prothrombin---->(thromboplastin)---> thrombin
Stage 3 - Fibrinogen-----> (thrombin)----> fibrin
Everything on left is already present in the body.
Everything on the right in present only when clotting occurs.

Fibrin.

It is activated (crossed link) by Factor VIII. This crossed link allows clotting in blood. This also produces in Liver.
