hiroaki samura. specifically referring to Blade of the Immortal /Mugen no Juunin

the man makes bloodshed a freaking work of art. great sketchiness to his drawings. his human forms are flawless. spreads and layouts are always stunning. all that and the man is a storytelling genius.

EDIT: and cheers for the other samura fan who answered!

While his stories aren't at the top of my list, the artwork of Johji Manabe is simply unbelievable. There are two things that put him in a category all his own:

1. THE BACKGROUNDS -- This may sound like a minor thing, but the backgrounds for his stories are often VERY exotic, like barren planets or steaming jungles, etc. The fact that he can draw such a variety is impressive by itself, but what really blows me away is their astounding detail. It looks like he spends a full year on each and every one.

2. CHARACTER DESIGN -- As a sci-fi/fantasy author, it's really easy to get stuck in old cliches like "human, dwarf, elf" or "human, ET". Manabe doesn't, instead creating the oddest assortment of aliens and strange creatures this side of Star Trek. He also does a great job with facial expressions and such.

Anyway, if manga art is your thing, Manabe is your man. His most popular series are "Outlanders", "Caravan Kidd", and "Drakuun", all available from Dark Horse.

It's a toss up between two: Shirow Miwa and Minekura Kazuya. Shirow Miwa is incredible. She's got enviable storytelling skills, without resorting to typical cliches and plot devices. Plus, she has the raw artistic talent to back it up. Her linework is amazingly intricate. Which only makes her toning pop out even more.

Minekura Kazuya is equally great with storytelling (although admittedly she gets convoluted on occasion), but her specialty is gritty realism between her characters. I can't stand interactions that don't ring true-- which is part of the reason I avoid shoujo like the plague-- and Minekura is great at the subtleties of real human relationships. Of course, her style takes a bit of getting used to for some, but once you do, her work is completely rewarding.

I must say that Hiroaki Samura has talent. I was first looking for manga suggestions. Naruto, Fushigi Yugi...but someone suggested Blade of the immortal. That one, I don't regret it one bit. He mostly draws in black and white. His pictures are something..it's like almost reality or like real photos..when samura wants it. There on some drawings that scary but yet like a dream...I wonder if it is on volume 14 or 15 but Makie came to help Anotsu and with that weapon of hers, she kills like 10 people but she does it with grace...the drawings makes you to feel it that way. I recommand strongly this manga. Soo if you like arts, make yourself a favor. Take a look..it'll give u an idea

Watase Yu *Ceres, Fushigi Yuugi, Absolute Boyfriend and many others*. I love her work because it looks so lifelike. You can really see the different emotions her characters go through through their facial expressions. Plus as an added bonus, can she EVER draw bishounen goodness!! ^_~. *For any FY fans like me, how about that drawing in the OVA mangas of Chichiri, Hotohori and Tasuki bathing in the waterfall?!?!* Happy fangirl sigh!
