If you are near a university that teaches speech therapy, contact their clinic. Their students must do a practicum, and you may be able to get speech therapy sessions for little or no money. If you are not near such an institution, contact your city or county agencies; there is a lot of help out there for people who need it - most of the time you just have to do a little digging. If your parents are religious and you feel their religious leader would be "on your side," contact him or her, to see if he can help you to make them see your side of the story. You might also discuss the issue with a teacher or school counselor who can act as an arbiter between you and your parents.
Good luck!

We are all diverse and feel the need for acceptance. Anything that we feel isn't perfect in ourselves causes anxiety, which ultimately can hurt us more than help. So first, relax. Stand in front of a mirror and recite your speech, then do it again. Get the "feel" of your narrative until you are not just giving a speech, you are presenting it. I had a friend with a really bad stutter, who when he gave a disertation once, I went tosupport because I thought he would need a good pick-up when people just left. After all, who wants to listen to someone fight with themselves to get to their own point? But even with his issue, most people stayed long after to ask him more questions on his subject. They didn't care how he said it, they cared about what he was saying. I have faith in you, you can do it too.

Ok, wel first of all, read outloud to yourself. Take your time, there is no reason to go fast. Next, and I am not sure if this works, But i have heard that listening to books on tape while you sleep, will also help you out alot. The last one i'll give you, is ask your speech teacher, or guidance counsler if they could possibly help you find a better solution.

okay your parents are holding you back? shame on them. you are not retarded. if your in school go sign up for speech class. if out? check with the college or the mental health center so they will direct you in the proper direction. if they wont help you i will. as i stated before. next week you will be able to go into my 360 and you can e-mail me. i will also allow you my phone number once you e-mail me. its sad when you want to better your speech and your own family hold you back. id never do that to my two grown children. my grand baby had a speech problem he is six. i helped him and he no longer has one. remember he is six years old. so if you cant get help remember me. im now gonna see if you have a 360 or if i can e-mail you. thanks

Well, I went to a speech therapist from the age of 5-8 for a lisp and it didn't help me a bit...I learned how to cover it up as I got older but I have to force myself to speak slower.

Can you talk to a teacher you like or another adult who might be able to help you? You don't say your age. Speech Pathologists can help you. Yes it is possible to teach yourself, but a tutor or someone who specializes in speech disabilities would probably be able to help you better than you can at this point. Don't be sad and hate your life....if you really want to improve your speech, you can do it. You just need to find a caring, compassionate adult who can help you or refer you to someone who can. God Bless You.

Is there a counselor at school who could explain this to your parents? You should not have to sneak around to help your speech. You could contact your doctor and ask them to speak to your parents. You could contact a speech therapist and have them talk to your parents. Contact the division of family services and explain your situation to them. You deserve to be helped. Best of luck to you!!

I do teach at risk youths, and not to say you maybe fabricating this. But, my experience has shown that those who suffer any type of speech dysfunction, are actually "good writers" in almost every case.
