I read that in order to remote desktop both computers have to be on the same network. If i want to remote desktop to my clients computer and we dont share a network how can i do this? I have used Hamachi to create a virtual network to other computers but wasn't sure if I could use the hamachi to create a network then remote desktop connect? What should I do?

First off, you can use remote desktop just fine across the public internet. I do it regularly. All you need is the IP of the computer you want to connect to, and of course it needs to be setup to accept remote desktop connections, and you need to make sure that the RDP ports are open, and if you're behind a NAT firewall, you need to make sure that the router is port forwarding those ports to the computer you want to Remote desktop to.

Now the reason to use Hamachi is 2-fold. First it gets around the port forwarding issue, because the peers are connected through the hamachi network, and Hamachi joins them together.

The other reason is that RDP has no inherent security, so Hamachi will give you a virtual private network around the RDP.

I have used Remote desktop with Hamachi and it does work fine once you get the remote computer setup. It can be tricky, as Hamachi needs to be setup as a seperate user from the one you are going to Remote desktop as. If you use the free client there's a howto on the Hamachi forums, although I think the paid client was supposed to make the installation easier. Be aware that any VPN solution introduces overhead and Hamachi is no different. Expect Hamachi'd remote desktop to noticeably slower than Remote desktop by itself. With that said, this all works as well and probably a good deal better than PCAnywhere and other similar remote client applications that cost quite a bit.

You can do that with the VPN connection itself....But in order to do that you need a static IP address...Find out the static IP address of the target machine and put them out in the window where it will ask the address of the remote machine that you want to connect to. But if Remote Deskstop doesnt work, you can actually try using Application sharing with Windows Messenger and it would work in the same fashion as that of a Remote Desktop......

I would highly recommend a product called logmein remote administration. This is a http based remote desktop program and there is absolutely no configuration needed for firewalls, routers, etc... I have been using this for years and I love it! They have a free version which allows you to take full control of the client computer. It is safe and secure. you can find out more from
https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp

Cheers!

You can remote in to any computer, as long as you know its IP address and the name of the computer. The internet is the only network you need.

You can Remote Desktop over the regular Internet - just make sure that their router forwards port 3389 to the computer that you need to control.

Should be able to. VPN counts as being on the same network. May have to be in the same Domain or Workgroup though.
