Wow, I could give you a very, very long response. But I'll spare you.

The differences between the Sunnis and Shiites go back almost to the founding of Islam and are essentially about who should govern the church and how. Remember, the Protestant Reformation began 499 years ago; the Sunnis and Shiites have been split since the 600s. So, their differences are even more ingrained than the Protestant-Catholic split in Christianity.

The Kurds are (mostly) not a separate religious group (they're mainly Sunni), but an ethnic minority.

And, really, are you surprised?

The main difference between Sunni and Shiites is as follows.
The Sunni recoginizes that the first four caliphs who were Mohammed's successors were the legitimate leaders of Muslims. The name Sunni comes from the Arabic sunnah, meaning the custom or example of the prophet Muhammad. Approx. 90% of muslims are Sunni.

Shiites, in contrast, believe that only the heirs of the fourth caliph, Ali, are the legitimate successors of Mohammed. "Shia" comes from the Arabic word shi'at 'Ali, which means the partisans of Ali. Ali was the son-in-law and cousin of Muhammad, and Shias believe that he was the prophet's rightful successor. Ali ruled as the fourth caliph after Muhammad, but he was assassinated in 661.

Worst Answers: 1. Islam is a great and peaceful religion. 2. Newspaper explanation I read years ago about Lew Alcindor becoming a Muslim and changing his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was that he was a Sunni Muslim and Sunni's were the more peaceful branch of Islam. (ISIS is made up of Sunni's as is 85% of American Muslims).

Are you asking, or just telling us he didn't know.

They are different sects. That is, like the difference between cuban and a mexican. They are both latin, but different blood roots.

The arabs countries and surrounding areas were different sects usually because they had different kings or princes at one time. Then someone either conquered, or joined many together, much like Saud did in Saudi Arabia.

shiite: They believe that the Imam Ali should have been the islamic prophet

Sunni: They believe that Muhammed is the last of the prophets.

The Kurds are a branch of the shiites. ( Less religious a little more secular)

purpose is the real distinction. actually not judgment. somebody might choose erotic artwork to be pornography via loss of adventure, or lack of ability to comprehend the unique purpose. yet yeah, the reality at the back of expression lies in purpose.
