Aside from any ADD stuff yes or no, it may just be that it seems boring to you (again, possible ADD). What you have to do is to make a conscious decision for each conversation as to whether the contents are or could be important to you. Focus on that. To keep your attention, the words have to have some value to you.

For example, it may be that you'll be meeting some new people for the first time, maybe your gf's parents. Be prepared, they'll get introduced, listen for their names, repeat the names out loud and in your head - "Tim, Joan, glad to meet you finally." ("Hmm, he does look like a Tim, and Joan, yeah, I had a teacher once who'd first name was Joan.") Now, stop thinking about that teacher, just file it away as a hook. Tim and Joan have already moved on to talking about their plans for Christmas, and you missed a couple of words. Get back in focus. Later on, you'll be happy not to have to whisper to the gf "What's your father's name?". Make a game out of it, bring some purpose to it. That'll make it easier, and you'll get better.

You can still spend plenty of time letting meaningless babble wash over you, but keep practicing your listening and conversational skills.

Does it sound like I might experience this myself? Yahh, all my life.

I hope something like this works for you. If not, yes, maybe you should really consider some medical consults.

Good luck, and happy daydreaming.

It could be a version of adult ADD, I tend to think that is the "easy" way out though. First, what are you thinking about when you become distracted? Stressors could be distracting you and alchohol (being a downer) can help you forget about your stress related items for a short period of time. If you are using alchohol as an escape or means to relax, this can be very dangerous for you as it may lead you to acholholism. Don't go to your doc or Pyschiatrist yet, go see a Psychologist. They are specially trained listeners to help you resolve or help you work through your stress related issues and maybe once you get those under control, you will be able to focus more easily.

You're an alcoholic. Stop drinking. It will get worse, then better.
