Yes, you need it to save games and download any extra content from xbox live.

It's for saving games, and downloading the latest software emu for XBL so you can play some of the XBX games. It's also for storing games, themes, gamer pictures, demo, trailers, movies, etc. that you buy or download from the XBL marketplace.

It's not necessary to have, but it's nice to have because you never know when you're going to need it. Plus, it's only 100 dollars more for the premium package, and you get a bunch of extras included, such as wireless controller.

The hard drive holds all your saved games, user profile, game updates, xbox live content such as downloaded games, extra games content, downloaded movies and TV shows, and any music or pictures that you have downloaded onto the system.

Without it you can't save unless you go buy a memory card, that comes with hardly and saving room.

if you want to be a good gamer, you must have the 20g hard drive.
