Were they guys? It might have been OMD - Orchestral Manouevers in the Dark. They sang a song called Dreaming.

REM has a song called losing my religion where they say "but that was just a dream" it that the one.
OMD has a song called dreaming where they say "i was only dreaming. Maybe that is what you are looking for. I think it was released in 1988 or 1989
