SG-1.. original is better...

Both are great but for different reasons; you can't really compare them. Although they run with the same basic idea (Stargates as pretty much the only/most efficient method of travel in the show's respective galaxy) they have significant differences that make each show unique, good and bad in their own ways.

SG-1, for example, has a larger fanbase because it has been on so long: you have character/name recognition and people who appreciate it. This is not for nothing. The show has (or had, up until a couple seasons ago) a strong team spirit and equally strong, developed characters. The villains are generally well-rounded individuals (Ba'al, for instance) and the storylines are engaging. As such, the earlier seasons of SG-1 are quite good because they stay true to this. However, recently the show has been going downhill: unoriginal plotlines and shallow characters (honestly, I never thought I'd see the day Daniel became mostly a comic relief character and stopped being the voice of humane reason) take away from the original solid show. It's been getting a bit better...we actually know more about Vala, for example, than just that she's a thief and likes to be ridiculously sexual.

Atlantis...hasn't had enough time to develop the characters as well as SG-1 did but there is still no excuse for it. What do we know about the show's main character, John Sheppard? He was in the military, he likes ferris wheels, lived in/likes Antarctica, was smart enough for Mensa, and once saw a nuclear explosion for reasons we've yet to learn. What a WELL-ROUNDED character. Where's his family, his hometown, his HISTORY before going to Antarctica? And why does he have the emotional range of a fruit fly, the desire to be the next Kirk, and sooper-speshul abilities? Poor development like this leaves us with a hollow love for the main characters that wanes easily. The show would be much better if we could truly relate to the people on screen whose lives we watch week to week. That's not saying Atlantis is deeply flawed; far from it, I believe it has great potential. It goes away from SG-1's focus on just the US and spends a good deal of the time talking about the largely civilian, international team. Along with that, it boasts stunning visuals (I, for one, was wowed by the midway space station's view between galaxies) and a beautiful setting. Plotlines could use a little tidying up, some more originality...but overall I look forward to new episodes of Atlantis more than SG-1.

I like SG1 much better than Atlantis. Favorite SG1 episode? 200! There's a producer who's making the stargate exploits into a movie, and all the people, Daniel, Carter, Valla, T'ealc etc. make up plots for the movie, going everywhere from space zombies to a dawson's creek SG1 with teenagers. Holy jeez, that's got to be the best/funniest episode I've ever seen! Can't wait for the two SG1 movies made for tv that are gonna air, concluding their battle with the Ori. Samantha Carter is moving to Atlantis full time, and they're gonna make another Stargate show with lots of cameos of our favorite SG1 characters. Who knows? Maybe these made for TV SG1 movies will bring new life to the series SG1 that we've all come to know and love. This sh** has been on for over a decade, and if these made for TV movies are a hit, I'm hoping we'll get a few more seasons of the SG1 series that started it all!!!

Stargate Atlantis... this season anyways. SG-1 only had a few good eps like Counterstrike and The Quest, but Atlantis has only had a few bad eps like the ones with Lucius Lavin.... the others have been excellent.

Hmmm?

Right now I'd have to go with SG-1, but Atlantis would get a lot better if they brought in the Asguard (finally repaying Earth for saving their a**) and had regular space battles between them and the Wraith as they protect Atlantis.

In the words of Jack O'niell, "I love those guys!" =P

SG-1, can't beat the original but I haven't seen all of the other, maybe I'll change my mind when I have.

SG-1
Amanda Tapping is way hotter than the anorexic Torri Higginson.
