It's all personal preference. They both have unique qualities and a different sound. It depends upon the music you are trying to make. I am a Gibson fan myself; I believe it has a fuller, thicker sound. You should try them both out. You may not like the way that one of them feels while you're playing it.

For simplicity's sake, I'm going to compare the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul (each company's most popular model). Of course there are variations within each model, but I'll stick to generalizations.

The Les Paul is a thicker, heavier guitar. This means a few things: it will weigh down your shoulder if you play standing up for an extended period of time; in terms of sound, the LP has a more dense, "chunkier" sound... Its more of a hard rock guitar. The LP also has a fused neck joint (as opposed to the screw on Stratocaster neck), which, combined with the density, will give you more sustain.

The stratocaster is a more diverse guitar and will sound good in pretty much any genre (even Iron Maiden play strictly fender strats). The strat, however, won't get as much sustain or tone as the LP. One other thing to consider is that the strat has 21 frets and a double-cut body (which means easier accessibility to the higher frets) while the LP has 22 frets and a single-cut body which makes playing the high notes a bit more challenging.

I own both and think they're both great in their own ways. I'd say to go to a music store and try out a few models. That way you'll get to hear them both and judge for yourself. Hope this helps.

Gibsons have a much heavier, thicker tone. Fenders are usually brighter and better suited to lead than rythm guitar. Of course, you can play pretty much any kind of music with any guitar, so it's mostly just personal preference. The Gibson will most likely be more expensive.

Gibsons have a thicker sound because of the humbucker pickups. Fenders sound 'thinner' because they have single coil pickups
