Anyone under the age of 18 is considered a minor. If something would happen to the parent or guardian, anyone under 18 would have to be under the custody of someone else. For example, interim custody of a minor could be that your mother is in the hospital and your uncle has interim custody until your mother is healthy enough to take care of you again. Interim custody basically means for a little while and not forever.

Interim custody means that the minor has been removed from the prior primary care giver (parent, guardian, government) and is in the care of a temporary care giver.

This temporary (interim) care giver may or may not take 'permanent' care giver status depending on a court ruling. If not another care giver will be selected.
