...each of which is diploid and genetically identical to the original cell. What activities are going on in the cell during interphase?

During interphase the chromosomes duplicate. Each one is copied exactly sort of like photocopying your notes. The same information is on the original and on the copy. Then during mitosis the chromosome copies are separated, like separating the copy and original. The cell then divides sharing the cytoplasm between each cell. During interphase many of the organelles also divide and the protein etc in the cell increases. The cell separates into two cells called 'daughter cells' that are exact copies (clones) of each other.

mitosis has 4 phases:

1) Prophase: nuclear envelope disappears and spindles start forming..

2) Metaphase: chromosomes line up in the center of the cell
(metaphase cannot go on to anaphase without chromosomes lining up)

3) Anaphase: spindle fibers attaches itself to the centromere of the chromosome and two sister chromatids separate and move towards the ends of the cell.

4) Telophase: nuclear envelope forms around the new sets of chromosomes.

5) Cytokinesis (not part of mitosis but part of the cell division): separating the two nuclear envelopes and forming 2 new identical diploid cells

paul get that off copy and quit pastin it

and mitosis, well the organelles should all have duplicated, then when mitosis starts, half go to one end of cell, half go to other, chromosomes line up in middle and duplicate, centromeres go to cell ends (near organells) and start making a spindle between each other, spindle ends meet in middle and each grab a chromosome end, then they pull and half of duplicated chromosomes go to one end and half go to other (so each have exactly same stuff) then cell membrane pinches off in center and u have 2 cells, unless its a plant cell and then the cell wall kind of grows a wall down center and they detach, and now u have 2 daughter cells

interphase is the part before the nuclear membrane breaks down and just before the spindle begins to form

just one mitosis is enough to produce two daughter cells.
