Alright, I need to ask some of you people something. I was on birthcontrol for over a year and stopped due to every time I was getting my period I would get sick. Not vomitting sick, Im talking about sore throat, cough, yucky feelings.
I just started a new pill a month ago Ive started my period and I have a sinus infection, sore throat, runny nose....
My doctor says its coincidence. I think its the pills.
Had any one else had these problems?
Should I take a morning shake of vitamins? I think my body might loose its abilty to fight off germs? is that possible?
Im confused, but I can't stand being on my period miserable and being sick too! :(

I searched for some information and I did find a reference on about.com website to symptoms of using birth control and one did mention lowering of the immune system.
"Many women who take BCPs are more susceptible to bacterial, yeast and fungal infections because of the use of BCPs. They suppress the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis by constant, daily doses of potent steroids. This HPA axis controls the immune system responses, which handle infectious assaults. You could be sick more frequently and with more serious illnesses."
I just don't know...

unfortunately all forms of oral contraceptives haven't shown any evidence of causing infections or colds :(
if you're getting sick at around the same time every month then it might be from another reason such as added stress at the end of the month (lowers immune system) or a certain activity (monthly meeting with a group of people).

if you want to boost your immune system then a multivitamin usually doesn't hurt to try, although if you are eating a relatively healthy diet then you don't have to worry. you could also try natural ginseng, which is has shown to help boost your immune system. ginseng has some side effects and might interact with your other drugs so talk to your pharmacist before starting it up.
as for vitamin E, studies show it doesn't do much in terms of antioxidant and overall health benefits. (it might help with cholesterol though)

It's coincidence. The birth control pill has nothing to do with getting sinus infections or anything else or lack of fighting off germs.
This is the time of year people get sinus infections.

I know. I have been taking the Pill for thirteen years now and I have gotten nothing like that caused by the Pill.

Try taking Vitamin E. It helps your body's resistance to colds and things like it.

Ask your doctor what you can do to strengthen your body's immunity to germs.

Hmmm, I've never heard of getting sick like that from birth control pills. I would always get nausea from them, but not like a cold. My guess would be that it is not connected to the pills. Good luck though.

No, not me...the only time I've gotten sick with birth control is when I take more than one (like if I missed) at a time, then it's nausea...no idea, good luck
