Aren't you just purchasing a stand alone unit? Is there an extra signal being sent that requires a service charge? Am I misunderstanding something about this? Why pay monthly? I'm not paying monthly for my dvd player or vcr, so why these items? Can someone explain this to me? Can I purchase a DVR off of ebay and get away without paying monthly charges?

Tivo has many services which are subscription based. If you have a stand-alone tivo, you don't need a subscription - but you won't be able to view the tv guide or record programs. You can, however, use pause and rewind/fast forward for instant replay.

after buying the tivo box you need the service in order to watch, record, pause and schedule things to record. Not to mention Tivo is great for following your favorite shows.
So you are paying for the additional service they provide you.
You'll find that your cable company has an OK dvr box. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles. And you still pay a monthly fee. But that's for renting the box.
You'd probably do better to rent the box from your cable company.

But TIVO rules!!

The Tivo box dials in at night for updates.

The box won't work to record your programs without the service connected. It won't do anything on your TV.

It also has to be compatible with your service provider ... Cable, satellite, etc. Just buying a box won't work in your system because it becomes your satalite receiver. It replaces your box.

Your guide, channel selection, programs to record, all run off the service. You have to activate the service after you hook it up.

I have it and it's awesome. For $6 a month it is money well spent.

I record all my favorite programs and never watch commercials. If you like having programs suggested it will pick programs you might like based on what you watch.

The box can be bought for free at Best Buy ... paid $99 and Directv sent me a check for $100 for a rebate.

Also if you have HDTV and want an HDTV Tivo that is really pricey around $999. You can't piece them in separately, thought of that already so I will just have to wait for that upgrade later.

Hope this helps.

Yes, TiVo does all of that. We just got Dish network with DVR and previously had 2 TiVos for the last few years. They are nearly identical, but I still miss the TiVo "Beep". LOL, I have two TiVo's sitting around unused, one of which has lifetime service. Interested??
