Gift cerfiticates are nice. You can find out if your child's teacher likes coffee or has a special interest--then you can get something based on that.
Speaking as a teacher myself, the most heartfelt gifts I have received, are a nice note from the parent thanking me for all the hard work I have done with their child. Don't get me wrong, gifts are nice, but a note that tells the teacher you truly appreciate what they do, goes a long way. When I am having a rough day and I'm contemplating why I ever decided to be a teacher (yes, we have those days) I llike to look at those notes. It reminds me why I chose this profession in the first place.

I'm doing this backward -- I'm going to give you a list of things to stay away from (I'm a teacher):
1. Anything scented -- you don't know if the teacher has sensitive skin -- also, many people are allergic to scents and teachers as well as students are discouraged from wearing anything with a scent for that reason. Anti-bacterial hand sanitizer is GREAT.
2. Candy, chocolates, things like that. You WOULDN'T BELIEVE how much crap appears for teachers to eat during the holidays. Seriously, any more and we'd pop.
3. Obviously, try to stay away from the too personal -- I got a lovely card and gift certificate from a parent suggesting I go out to eat with my boyfriend -- we had just broken up.
4. Things for the classroom are always welcome -- one year I got a globe.
The best gifts I've ever gotten have always included notes telling me how much the parent appreciates the time and effort I put into teaching kids. I've also seen gifts from parents that include "gift certificates" from the kids -- "I will volunteer to do ______" or "I will clean the room for you" etc. Hope that at least narrows it down a bit for you.

A personal note of appreciation is a great gift. When I get them, I tape them to the inside of a folder and when I get that, "WHY AM I HERE?" feeling, I open my folder of positive notes.
Another great gift is a favorite book to add to the class library, or even the school library with a nice dedication written in it.
other suggestions
plant for the classroom
journal notebooks
gift cards to fast food places, book stores
a lapel pin
cute post it notes (never have enough of those!)
a picture of your student
germ-X
lysol wipes (OK it's flu season i'm getting a little carried away)
(I would stay away from scents or bath & body stuff... you never know when someone is alergic) However, if the teacher has lotion on her desk... get the same type.

This is going to sound silly but one of the best gifts I ever received as a teacher was a home made cheesecake that the girl and her mom made. Her mom was a terrific cook and cheesecake is a receipe that just never works for me. Teachers always love good pens and great stationary. They also like decorations for their classrooms. If you go to a teachers store or look online you should be able to get those. (Think spring etc )

A gift certificate at the local teacher supply store!
One parent of mine made a cool collage of all the kids photos she took when she came to a party we had. Framed it nicely.
She also heard we were on paper rationing and got all the other parents to turn in their cartridges to OfficeMax to get a ream of paper for free. She got a box from the library and put all the reams in, just like it was new. Wow!

This year we're giving my daughter's fifth grade teacher an Apples to Apples game, the junior version. It's a sort of word matching game, so it's educational but loads of fun as well. My 11th grader learned it when her English teacher had them play in class a couple months ago, and she liked it so well she made me buy one for the family. We had so much fun with it, we bought four as Christmas gifts! And the more people playing, the better, so it makes a great game for playing at indoor recess in school. We found ours at Target for $20.

I'm a teacher and I get so much candy that it is sickening. Also, stay away from candles and lotions. I've received tons of that type of thing in my 2 years of teaching. I would love to get a gift card to a book store. It would be great if you could get your children's entire class to go in together and get a nice gift card to Barnes and Noble, Targer, Walmart, or even the movies.

Maybe splurge on some really fancy stuff that can be used up - bath sets or tea or something. Or gift cards for things like car washes, movies, restaurants... I would try to avoid little trinket-type things. Teachers get a lot of that. We like stuff that we can use!

most teachers would love a gift card to a local mall or to a teachers store to buy things for their classroom since teachers spend a good deal of their own money on school supplies
