Not colder than normal temps, in winter they automatically (animals, not people b/c of the fact of clothing, houses, etc) will put on weight. Their leptin horomone levels decrease and that stimulates them to eat more to stay warm for the upcoming winter. Their coat will get thicker. If it ends up being a milder winter, they may start to shed or eat less. When an animal goes into winter, it's body prepares it for the worst case senario that it has seen (if you are in a warm climate- it probably won't change at all). If you have a dog that is constantly in the house, they probably will not grow a lot thicker coat or gain much weight. Horses, if outside, will start packing on the pounds if given free choice hay, and become very fuzzy.

Its a fact with dogs. My dogs appetite increases in the winter. Were not as active in the winter as we are in the summer so we eat more. So I believe humans also gain.
