I'm an Australian Atheist and I take no offense to Christmas and 4th July. I understand how important they are to society so I'm willing to embrace such holidays.

Oh gee I see it that way too. Soon there will be nothing allowed because it might be offencive to someone else.
Why do non Christians not work during the Christian celebrations instead of take the day off too.
Why when someone says Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas there is a huge difference.
I think that everyone should be allowed to celebrate in what ever manner is good for them.
If I am Christian and I want to hang a star out on my balcony because it means something to me I should be able to do that
We can all love one another without causing trouble.
Sheesh what the world is now or needs now is LOVE LOVE LOVE
too much HATE hate hate.
Let people be.........and have their own fun
Sorry I think I got a little carried away

Nope. I enjoy getting cards and letters over the holidays. I'm agnostic, though I was raised in an evangelical protestant household. I like the ones with the Wise Men on the Camels, though I know that the Wise Men wouldn't have shown up until like 2 years later so it's totally unrealistic that they would have shown up with the shepherds. Would you be offended if someone sent you a Hanukkah card? Or are you offended when you get a non-religious winter themed card?

Religion tends to be more controversial than non-religion...
...and Santa Claus is more secular than religious, I don't know any folks who are offended by Santa images, even if they don't try to teach their children the myth that he brings presents down their chimney...
The xmas tree was originally pagan...
What tends to bug people is the celebration of one particular religious myth to the extent that it was made a non-woking (for many) holiday...why not also celebrate solistice? It's an even older celebration than xmas and the reason xmas was put in december...there's hannukah, saturnalia, and others (just in Dec)...why is only one myth celebrated and not all of them?
Since we (as a society) don't celebrate all of them, why is "happy holidays" so offensive? It covers whatever a person might be celebrating this time of year, instead of arrogantly assuming they are xian and observe xmas as a religious holiday...

ok. first, we must separate church and state. christmas is not technically allowed to be publicized like it is because it ISSSS offensive to those who don't celebrate it. however, the 4th of July is an AMERICAN holiday, it has nothing to do with religion at all. yes, if someone in england wanted to celebrate it, i guess it could be offensive. but if you are living in america, you cannot legally take offense to it because it is a nationally holiday.

I don't think Christmas is offensive to non-Christians. I think the assumption that everyone celebrates Christmas is what is offensive to those who don't. Their traditions are important to them, just as yours are to you.

It is probably only offensive to any English people who still are sore about the American Revolution. ;)

Lets also get rid of new years day it offends my people are drinking.
I also don't work so lets get rid of labor day. Oh yeah I also anti war so lets get rid of veterans day and memorial day this are all holidays they offend me deeply.
The only day I like is FEB 28. for no reason.
That is how dumb this debate is getting. If you don't like it then don't celebrate it.
Actually I celebrate all of the above holidays.
