Have we not learned from Peter Griffen (Family Guy)? Petoria went down without a shot fired.
Yeah, after the Civil War, it was more or less deemed impossible.

Not from the US without consent of congress. That was established after the Civil War. You cannot form a confederation and then secede, forming confederations within states is explicitly forbidden by the US Constitution.

You could make a micronation! Many other people have.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micronation
The traditional requirements to be a state are to have:
1. The existence of a stable population
2. A defined territory
3. A functioning government
4. A government that engages in foreign relations on behalf of the territory
So, if you defined your house as your territory, for example, and the population as you, and formed a government consisting of you, and wrote a letter to the US government & the UN announcing yourself as a State and your creation of an independent territory etc, you could technically have your own nation! You may have to declare war on the US too but I don't advise that in this day and age, as you would probably end up in an orange jumpsuit, being sodomised with a broomstick. The best outcome would be that no one would take you seriously.

Key west did. It is now the conch republic.
During the Cuban missile crisis, the military made a barrier protecting the U.S. south of Miami, ignoring the Keys.
The mayor and others upset about this, after no responses to their complaints, seceded from the nation, and declared war on the U.S. Then dozens of them in their boats rode up to the military ships and bombarded them with stale bread, and quickly surrendered. They then immediately demanded sovernty and protection.
The Conch republic attends invitational functions that others get invitations to, but they must pay their own way, as the u.s. does not recognize their succession.

no this is what the civil war originally started over, not slavery. After it was over the congress made it to where a state can't secede.

States can try to secede. People just leave and become ex-patriots if the other nation will let them,
