Uh... Skip any notion about putting poems to music, for one thing. Insofar as popular contemporary music is concerned, lyric writing is a discipline unto inself, one involving many more rules than that of popular poetry. Song lyrics, for one, have to be SUNG, which means there are certain words that work in certain places of a melody, and words that do not fit. And the syllables have to SOUND GOOD in the places where they fall. Long story short? That's why everybody can't do it well. It ain't easy! You can't just take your buddy's girlfirend's poems and slap music to 'em and expect to have anything listenable. I'm a professional musician/songwriter and, frankly, I don't really know how to tell you what to do or how to do it. I just think you need to TRY. And maybe suck for a while... Hopefully hear from others WHY you sucked and try to fix that. As with anything, you will see improvement if you don't quit and keep trying to better yourself. My early songs kinda sucked ---and some may say that my new ones still do--- but I wasn't totally out of the ballpark either. But, when someone told me I was weak in some area, I would concentrate, try to see what they meant and how successful writers may have done it differently, and tried to show improvement the next time out. You could try any number of the books out there but 1) virtually NONE of them is written by anyone who's had any major success at it, and 2) I never really feel I learn anything from those books (although the REAL book to get is SONGSMITH, by Jimmy Webb, who has writte MANY great songs). Good luck!

The lyrics need to come from your heart, like there is someone else guiding you to write, write, write!!!

You need to write a complete song in 30 minutes or less ... and have it make total sense! Write a song that takes you months to get it right! Write a Chrismas song on the hottest day of the year!

Just let it flow! All by itself!

Grow with a new idea, a new concept and let it fly!!!

Learn guitar or keys! This will lead you to unknown places!

This is how it was for me!

I've not sold a great song, though I have written many (IMHO)!

Good luck with your journey! May the world love your music!

yeah it makes a enormous change if you're gambling an acoustic or an electrical ... confidently it is an acoustic cuz you're losing a while on an electrical with out drums and a bass ... if it is an acoustic what I might propose is attempting to paintings in combination on finding out a few well songs you understand ... perhaps take a few rock songs or anything and switch them into acoustic types ... that kinda factor is lovely effortless and it is helping you be trained to paintings in combination good together with your singer and kinda be trained how songs glide and all ... it'll aid you alot in the event you attempt to write your possess stuff ... as for that ... KEEP IT SIMPLE! writing your possess songs can also be relatively tricky ... in particular while youre operating along with different persons ... you do have got to recognize a few song thought however so long as it is only one guitar and a singer you handiest want the fundamentals ... writing your lyrics is the truly trick however it definently is helping to have a well singer ... it may be lovely exquisite when you have the skillability ... simply write out of your center ... take little steps and hold it realistic ... simply have amusing! well good fortune!!

I got started by listening to a few songs I like and trying to re-write lyrics for them, following the same rhyme scheme, verse/chorus pattern. After trying this a few times, I was able to start writing my own stuff. Or, you could workshop with some friends and throw some ideas around. I find that always helps too.

Just find something and work on writing about it. My friend just writes random stuff about bottles of soap and whatever else to get the creative juices going. You just need to be able to open your mind up and think about it. Or just put some music on, groove out to it and maybe freestyle something. :P

listen to beatles, led zeppelin and other great songwriters. theyl be great help in the structure of the song. ask ur friends if they have some good poems they wrote. or write some of ur own. then just sorta fuse them into a song if they fit the mood etc.
