what a coincidence..i had this problem yesterday. you do NOT have to buy a new monitor. and you could use degauss but thats only used for small spots. what i did was i turned the monitor off, took a refridgerator magnet and held it like 1/2 inch away from the screen and started at the top left corner of the screen..then you move it to the spot 1/4 inch away, to the next spot and so on..going across til i got to the top right corner. (this would be the first row) then 1/4 inch down do the same thing for the second row..then do the rest of the rows, all the while going 1/4 inch down each time until you get to the bottom. repeat process (i only had to repeat once but if your problem is worse than mine you will have to repeat it twice) turn it back on and see what you got. if you have to repeat it a 2nd time it is said then you have to hold it like 1/4 inch away from the monitor. and now that i did this, almost all the green shadow and faded coloring is gone off my monitor..all thats left is a little green spot..so im thinking you might end up w/just a little spot and that is when you CAN use the degauss feature (unfortunately i dont have that feature on mine) but try it and see. but if degauss doesnt work, you could turn monitor back off put the magnet at that spot and it might go away, im just afraid it might make coloring come back so i didnt do it. but you wont be farther off than you started if it does..so if youre determined to get it out and dont mind taking risks, you can try it if nothing else wors.

It depends. It will probably fade in a day or two. If a semi-permanent field has been induced in the mask, then it need degaussing. I don't know where you would find a degaussing coil or degaussing service these days. LCD panels don't have this problem, so its becoming obsolete. Don't listen to the doomsayers. All that has happened is that the magnets have magnetised the metal colour mask behind the screen a tiny bit, which is deflecting the electron beam a bit. The mask is metal and doesn't form a permament magnet. Many screens have a degausser built in that is activated at switch on (the short boinnngggg sound you hear when you turn it on). So usually, such magnetic fields fad in a few days or sooner.

Usually, when this happens to LCD monitors, the problem is permanent. You cannot remove the weird colors by pressing the degauss button. That only prevents your monitor from burn-ins, which is not your problem. Magnets permanently disrupt the crystals in LCD monitors.
It is best that you purchase another monitor, or if your computer is still covered under its warranty, contact your manufacturer and see if you can get a replacement.

Turn your monitor off and on a few times, it should go away. The degaussing coil will automatically run when the monitor is turned back on! Aint no need to hunt for a button! Most monitors dont even have them!

I believe the degauss button looks like an upside down horseshoe with a line through it. On my computer, you find it by hitting the menu button on the front of the monitor. Good luck.

Degauss the monitor. Your monitors control screen functions should have that option.

Let me guess, CRT monitor, the answer, "Degauss". You should be able to find that under it's settings. (on the monitor itself)
If not, you'll be getting a new one for christmas!

What has happened is you've disturbed the magnetic field of the monitor. Your best bet is to take the monitor to the store and tell them what happened. They can re-align the monitor to resolve your situation.
