I have a fantail goldfish that I have had for almost 4 years. The man I got it from said he had it for a few years too. My fish's body is 5 1/2 inches long without the tail. What is the average lifespan for these fish anyway? It is mostly white with a few really bright gold spots on its head and front fins, but they have slowly been turning white in the last month or so. Other than that, the fish is in great shape, the fins are fine, no visible wounds or tears in the fins or body. The eyes look good, not cloudy, and it acts fine. So, why is it changing? I know that when they are young they do this, but why would a fish at this age change?

Yes, it's normal. I've had several goldfish over the years, and they do tend to completely change color. I have a big black moor right now that's turned about 80% white. They'll change color then sometimes change back again. Not sure why, but I actually think it's pretty cool, like getting a new fish.

As Zoe said, Goldfish can continue to change colors through out their lifes. You sound like you take good care of your fish and know whats going on with him/her and everything sounds fine. I wouldnt worry about it!

Alot of factors can trigger a color change... low lighting and food being two of the biggest. Goldfish need alot of protein for vibrant color so if you have changes food recently, that could be a factor. Or it could be just a random change!

It is not unheard of for goldfish to continue changing colours for their entire lives. If you know that the water is clean, tank is big enough, care is good, fish isn't sick, then I wouldn't worry about.

Properly cared for, your fancy could like 15 or more years!
