it's the American way
most people don't even know what you stated in your question
reading may be fundamental, but many elected officials count on the population not holding them accountable for things like this and so many other concerns like poverty, a levy breaking, homelessness, factories closing, unemployment, etc, etc,etc

That thumping sound you just heard was me, beating my forehead against the desk.

We observe Columbus Day because it was the first documented landfall by Europeans in the New World, and THAT is important because no one else in modern times had managed to figure out how to cross an ocean, much less understand that one could expect to find land on the other side.

This is a great accomplishment.

If you are going to offhandedly suggest that Columbus killed Indians (NOT native Americans, please; I was born in New Jersey, and that makes me a native American), I'd suggest that you offer proof, not supposition.

Teach kids historical fact, I say. Plenty of time for them to figure out how to feel about it on their own, later.

No reason at all. Many people simply go to work. It was created to celebrate supremacy in the US

if you have the day off then why do you care?

not everyone has the day off either, so it isn't a holiday for everyone.
