Why are the layouts of the US and Uk keyboards different if they use the same keys. I only notice that the Poud Sterling symbol is not present in the uk keyboards but all the other keys are. Why is this????

Because the US decided on their own layout and so did the UK. Just like how UK English & US English are different in terms of spelling.

£ is present on a uk keyboard lol so is $ and on newer ones u get the euro symbol its key 3 and 4 and (fn) 5 § for the euro symbol lol all keyboards use the qwerty layout just some contries alter qwerty to there own lil version of it to suit the users needs of that perticular continent/country/language :)

You mean the Pounds Sterling symbol ('£') *is* on the UK keyboard? It's not on the US one because they don't use it. Typically if Americans need to use a pound symbol for something, they use what we call the hash symbol (which they insist on calling a pound symbol). Confusing if you suddenly find yourself on a US computer for a while :-)

The other difference is that the @ and " symbols are switched around.
