2) Are racial boundaries desintegrating in pop music? Is it becoming less ghettoized. What does it signify about our society?

1) Can racial inequality provide a shield to hide behind?

I think what he means by this is, is this something that people usually use as an excuse? For example, if a black man doesn't have a job, and he just blames it on his race, rather than on the fact that he happens to be very lazy, then his race would be a shield that he is hiding behind.

And yes it does provide a shield, in my opinion. One that is uneccesary, and one that only weakens the race. Whichever race it may be.

2) Are racial boundaries desintegrating in pop music? Is it becoming less ghettoized. What does it signify about our society?

Hmm, I think that boundaries in music have almost totally been wiped out. If you think of a pop singer, you can either think of Christina Aguilera, Mya, or like 2034980 more singers that arn't the same race. I think that what it signifies is that we as a society tend to take artists in for their worth now rather than their color.

It's totally different in other fields of society though. Like politics etc..

1) do you think some people may use the fact of inequalities inherent in a system as an excuse to cover their own shortcomings? (i.e. it ain't me, man ! it's the system)

2) this is a stretch: is the current movement of popular music less differentiated by "color" lines than, say. twenty years ago?
(be careful on what that signifies - because the recording industry is actively after SALES and not some nice guy promoting racial harmony.)

always question your assumptions

These questions are SO subjective that the answers are either the opinion of your teacher or an effort by your teacher to get you to think.
I hope the latter.
