I had a snake with black saddles from head to toe. It was about 2 foot long. The head was very narrow like an arrow head. Does anyone know anything about snakes in Louisiana?

I agree with Rock, in your are there are banded watersnakes. The description of the head made me think it was such. Your house was/is probably being used as a place to hibernate. Having any problems with mice?

If the head on that snake was triangular it could be poisonous. It sounds like a small water moccasin or it could have been a king snake or rat snake. The second site has a photo of a Water Moccasin someone killed if you want to look at it. Third site has pictures of some of the venemous snakes in Louisiana . Water Moccasin is also called a cotten mouth. They are very venemous. Be very careful with any snake it is probably looking for warmth. WM and small rattlesnakes have been known to crawl under doors of houses. I agree it also could be a rat snake also. It depends on which region of louisiana you are in.

Sounds like he was hibenating in your kitchen and woke up for a snack. Still, I would be quite shocked to see a snake in December, and I LIKE snakes.

You didn't say what part of Louisiana you are in but it could be anything from a rat snake to kingsnake to a rattle snake.

I agree, it SOUNDS like some type of rat snake. Rat snakes are constrictors and very beneficial to have around. They eat rodents and other snakes, even the venomous ones. Without actually seeing the snake, this is only a guess.

From that description id say water snake, prarie king, ratsnake, hognose, or bullsnake. If you could get a pic I could put an ID. Snakes come in to peoples homes to hibernate usually basements. If you cant identify it dont touch it.

Be cautious of ALL snakes!!! I have lived in the mountains with them for over 16 years and they are very mean and dangerous creatures. I do know know what type of snake this is but I suggest you keep a shotgun in your house to shoot it's head off, if you do not live in the city, but if you do, then call animal control and they will come and get it. The snake must have came out of hibernation because it is sick.

Ya i agree it probly a wild snake that thought your kitchen was perfect to hybernate in. and you woke him up. Its most likely not posionous or anything to be scared of just shoo it outside and go on living. snakes are no harm at all unless u indanger them
