Take a polynomial, like for example:

y = 3x^3 + 3x^2 -10x + 12

The terms 3, 3, -10 are called coefficients, while the last term 12 is called the constant. Coefficients are numerical quanties that are multiplied with mathematical expressions. Another such example could be:

z = 5 Sin(xy) + 10 e^2y + 2 Log(-x^2 + y^2)

The coefficients in this expression would be 5, 10, and 2. Get it now?

In chemistry, math or anything else, a coefficient is simply a number some quantity is multiplied by. Let's say you have a fly in your house. Later on your stupid brother leaves the door open and now you have ten flies in your house. In other words ten times as many as you had before. In this case ten is the coefficient. The number of flies you had before was 1. Now you have 10 (1). Notice the coefficient multiplies the original number, not adds to the number. Applying this to chemistry. H represents one hydrogen atom. 2H would be two Hydrogen atoms. H2 represents a pair of hydrogen atoms. 2H2 represents 2 pairs of hydrogen atoms or four altogether. The "2" after the H should be small (a subscript) but there isn't one on my keyboard. In each case the first two, the one before the H is a coefficient.

In chemistry, the coefficient numbers refer specifically to the numbers in front of elements in a balanced chemical reaction. For example, in the following reaction of methane and oxygen (the numbers following the elements should be subscripts):

CH4 + (2) O2 -> CO2 + (2) H2O

The numbers in front of the elements (in parentheses for clarity) are the coefficient number. If a number is not shown and the equation is balanced, then the coefficient is 1.
