My boyfriend surprised me with tickets to see The Nutcracker, but I have no idea what to wear. This is my first time to see a ballet.

i've been to a couple of ballets & people generally didn't wear suits or formal clothing (unless it was an invitation-only premiere). the women did dress up but not full length gowns or anything, just smart modest clothing. heels are fine. jeans are fine too as long as they're not ratty with holes all the way though them. people dress as though they're going to a classy restaurant really.

sometimes i get the impression that it's the first time some people have been to the ballet by how dressed up they get, when i saw 'swan lake' one women wore a full length tafetta dress, the kind you would wear to a formal or prom, & she looked utterly ridiculous compared to everyone else. i saw another ballet where a guy wore a white tuxedo with coat-tails & a white top hat. believe you me, none of the other men bothered with that. i'm not sure if these rules are mitigated by the fact that i live in australia & our hotter climate tends to apply more relaxed dress codes, but i do feel smart rather than formal is the key.

in any case take into account the venue, what time the ballet is showing (if it was a matinee performance you wouldn't have to get as dressed up as an evening performance), the weather and what you'll be doing before/after.

above all, have fun!

Just wear a Tutu, haha!
Casual evening dress is fine unless you want to make an exceptional impression on the snob patrol with a formal gown but the real deal in this; if you have cheap seats then dress down because it's a give away that you are not the upper crust of society.

It depends on where you are seeing the Nutcracker and what sort of company it is. At the least, you should wear nice jeans and a nice blouse. If you are going to a large well-known theater or seeing a well-known ballet company such as ABT, San Fransisco Ballet, etc., you should dress up more, at least nice slacks or a cocktail dress. Regardless of where you are going, do NOT wear a T-shirt or a mini skirt, or anything of that sort... just dress respectful, not like you are going clubbing.

You don't necessarily have to dress up fancy but I would wear a dress rather than ripped jeans :) hope this helped

Tights and a tutu but don't upstage the performers!!
No just joking, It would be nice to wear something semi formal at least like your prom or homecoming dress.
Don't go all Goth or anything as it will be upsetting to the other patrons and you don't want to attract that kind of negative attention.
If you don't have a semi formal or formal gown, please, please, please, don't dress down any lower then a business dress suit. It would be nice to stay away from pants of any kind.
If all else fails, every girl should own a little black dress of some sort and just dress it up with some simple silver jewelry.

Awsome! Good for you! Do dress up a little. Dress slacks with a turtleneck is a start. It's okay to wear jeans, but definitely dress it up with nice shoes/boots and a nice coat. Check out this site for great accessories: http://AmericanChic.net

I really like long skirts. My bf likes the short ones. So my closet is stuffed w/ 1/2 and 1/2.
