Sounds like a wise purchase (JD 790-?).
I would get the 3pt blade on the back, if room permits for storage, it is handy with snow removal to have the front loader and rear blade. Blade scrapes it and then the loader piles it high. It is also helpful for leveling and landscaping projects.
Check out www.tractorbynet.com a few people there have purchased them and have comments/etc, they may be able to help you with your decision on JD or anything else you are considering.

The right time will be when you truly are unable or unwilling to continue doing this with a push mower. But, you will have to have the money or the credit. So, start saving now and when you have finally had enough, go buy it. Although, I have lived in a more rural community and what many people did that had large spreads was to mow a normal yard area around the house and drive and let the rest go to seed. If snakes are a problem, you will have to mow further from the house. Another thing to think about with this is brush/wild fires. Lightning can start a grass fire the will spread rapidly. Good luck, Rail

Only buy the John Deere if you want the best brand out there - otherwise go with an inferior brand.
Good Luck!!!

My Grandparents used nothing but Massey-Ferguson equipment on their dairy farm for decades. Never had any complaints

I'm not happy with my basic model, but it sounds like what you're looking for is completely different -- for more serious projects than what I use mine for.
