I say absolutely not, you, as audience member, however have that option...I think there may be a context where you can receive the music 'better' in a more relaxed, less inhibited state but the same can not be said for the one giving the performance, they need to have all their faculties about them...what do you think?

It's wonderful to hear someone think as clearly and maturely as you do. That "excuse", that musicians can perform better while under the influence, has been used since the days of Woodstock and Jimi Hendrix, etc., and it was bullshit then, and it's bullshit now. Thank you for your clear-headed question. God Bless you.

well if it's alcohol you are talking about then no! I have seen some artists whether its a band or just one singer that was drunk and they couldn't even get thru a song before starting another one. they were soooooo horrible that people actually started booing them and began to leave. Others stayed cuz it was pretty comical to see the band try and keep up with them. Some that I have seen drunk were of course Willie Nelson and one time I saw Brooks and Dunn, which Kix Brooks was drunk and had a hard time singing(the one with the cowboy hat on all the time)

depends...sometimes being under the influence might relax them in a way that they give a better performance than if they weren't under the influence. when they're relaxed, they might give a better show than when they're not as relaxed. i'm not trying to justify doing drugs, i'm just stating a hypothesis.

I hate to admit this, but I really liked Aerosmith better when they were on drugs. However, about 10 years ago, I saw the Kiss reunion and Ace Frehely never played better and he was sober for the first time. So I guess it depends on the person.

No.
However, as an avid drug experimenter and musician, I will say that using certain drugs carefully and with great precaution and preparation (i.e. psychedelics such as marijuana, psilocybin) can greatly expand the thresholds of your mind and creative conceptions. But after this has been achieved, you do not need the drug to reproduce or perform it again.

I think if the musician has anxiety issues, it could definately help them relax and perform better, depending on the substance and amount.
