I honestly gave all my children rice cereal when they were just days old. Of course not large amounts at first, but they ate it. It helped them sleep through nights as well. Very soon after they were eating baby food.

I have a sister-in-law that has a 7 month old and follows her doctor's guidelines to a tee and she JUST started her daughter out on cereal last week. To me that was crazy.

My son's pediatrician told us at his 4 month visit last month that he can start rice cereal, 100% juice(diluted 50/50 with water), and baby food.

Now he's 5 months and will be 6 months on Dec. 24. I give him rice cereal 2 times a day, less then 1/4 cup each time. I mix the 100% juice in with the cereal and thats the juice he gets for the day, although you can give up to 2oz juice diluted half way with water. Also he is allowed up to 1 SMALL Stage ONE jar of baby food a day(not all at once). Start out with Vegitables only so he doesnt deny them later when he's getting the fruits that are much more tasty.

Also to sure you are only introducing one new food at a time. Example: give him a couple spoons of sweet potato wait a day to make sure there is no allergic reaction. I would try that at least 2 times before giving him a whole jar. And be sure not to give sweet potato in the morning and then apple sauce at night until you are sure baby isnt allergic to either one.

He has been breastfed since birth and is a big boy. 18lb 11 oz as of 2 weeks ago.

I wouldn't give him baby food, start him out on rice cereal. Add some applesauce to it in a week. If his stomach handles it, mix rice cereal and other fruits. I'm not sure about the oatmeal cereals. I recall that that is too harsh for a little baby and that should be later like 9 or 10 months.

I know someone who started feeding their baby iron enriched rice cereal at 3 months. I started my son on rice cereal at 5 months. If you feel comfortable starting your baby on solids, and your baby is willing to eat it, go ahead. Just check with your local clinic or doctor what foods are suitable at such a young age, and how many solid feeds per day.

I thought you were supposed to start rice cereal at 6 months and then move onto vegetables and then fruits. And when you start the vegetables and fruits I was advised to wait a week before giving a new flavor...so you can watch for reactions.

Start with cereal. If he eats it without pushing the food back out (tounge thrust reflex) then he is ready to eat baby foods

Cereal does NOT help young babies sleep through the night. When their central nervous system develops more, then they start sleeping more.

You can start giving him/her cereal ( start with rice) from there you can move on to oatmeal, and then baby food once it's been determined your baby has no allergies to the cereal..

You can but its not advised. The nurse told me six months is actually when you should start the baby on solids to avoid allergies and ease digestion.
