A great deal...for example there is a new movement (a Nobel Prize was won this year by a practitioner) which is based on microeconomics, with small loans being made to poor people so they may buy a cow or start farming, which in combination with other such loans results in remarkable economic growth, which in turn prevents poverty, disease, famine, political unrest, etc.

Economics is the study of human beings engaging in commerce
Commerce is when individuals exchange assets.
Nobody willingly makes an exchange that is not at least fair
Hence, both parties engaged in a transaction, are presumably better off after any transaction
So commerce is when individual improve their lot through exchange
So economics is the study of people bettering their lot in life.
The community is serviced by the benefit that is attained by the citizenry which, is benefiting from free trade.
The more trade, the more prosperous a community.
The more economic opportunity in a community, the less poverty
The less poverty, the lower the crime rate, the higher the standard of living, the more options humans have, the better off the community is.
A better economy equals more jobs, more tax revenue, more community resources, more money available to help those in need.
Economics is a way of looking at society as a whole in a mathematical sense.
Community service is either a punishment meted out in lieu of prison, or (and I think this is what is being asked about in the question) Community service is the betterment of society.
If the latter is true the economic is the study of the community servicing itself
