And to bring food and a gift to swap? And to stay the whole time?

It's not fair to force this on you. The bigger issue is why are you working for this company? You don't sound happy to be there.

Hey - at least you have a J-O-B. Kwitcherbitchin.

Is it fair for them to "make you" bring food, and a gift, and to stay for the whole duration? No. Do you value your job? Is everyone else complying? Then you'd better, too. I would make a pan of brownies (pretty cheap to do), buy a reasonably priced gift (a gift certificate is the safest), and stay for about an hour, claiming you have a family commitment and have to leave early. Unless, of course, you find once you're there, that you're actually having a good time, in which case, stay for as long as you feel comfortable. The cardinal rules of company parties are - don't dress inappropriately, don't have more than 2 drinks (no matter HOW much you "normally" drink), and DO NOT be the last to leave. It's once a year - make the sacrifice.

That's a long time to stay somewhere you don't want to be. Do you have to stay the whole time? Maybe you can come up with an excuse to leave early.

Is the party during working hours? If not you don't have to stay anyplace you don't want to.
