I work in Bourbonnais Illinois. I work for an american. I want to know if this is right and is there anything I can do about it. I know that when we tip out to the busser we are spost to pay 10 percent of what we make. This girl I work for makes us pay 3-8 dollar tip out. We do not make that. It is a small resturant. I mean if I make 12 dollars she still wants 5 dollars from me and I don't think it is right. It is like this everyday. All the waitress added up what we pay out and it is 150.00 a week and there is only 5 of us girls. I mean we are paying the bussers wages and I think that is wrong. We should not have to pay that the owner of the resturant should. Can anyone help me please. Also you can not tell the owner anything she thinks it is fine. Also she said I have been a waitress for 4 years I know what I am doing. Really she does not know what she is doing. If she was a waitress she would not be robbing us. Please help.

First of all, you are entitled to at least minimum wage by law. That means your base pay + tips must be equal to the minimum wage in Illinois, which is $6.50/hour (could be higher if your city has a special ordiance). Are you making at least $6.50/hour after everything considered? If not, the owner MUST pay you the difference.

Now, the next part...whatever tips you make are YOURS to keep. You can pay the bussers whatever you think is fair. However, you risk being fired. My suggestion is to keep a record of your tips each day and give 10% (and only 10%) to the bussers. Keep a log on paper. Then, if you get fired, you can use it against the restaurant in a lawsuit.

Thats so weird that I happened to read this question! I live in Bourbonnais too!! How weird right? I've never been a waitress but I can tell ya that doesn't sound right! Maybe find a new job? I work at Best Buy and I love it! The pay is good too, but I need another job with more hours.. I was thinking a waitress, but like I said, I've never done it before. Is it worth the money in the long run? alirienal28@yahoo.com if ya wanna write back

Well first off you might want to speak to management and see what they have to say.

To be honest with you, waitressing is just as tough as bussing, so I think what she is asking is okay. I hate cleaning up after peoples' messes. You are lucky that you just get to take orders and bring them food. I hate wiping tables, seats etc. No offense of course
