You're looking for David Garrick. (Stanislavsky was 20th century). Garrick popularized a more naturalistic style of acting compared to the stagy proclamations that characterized theater before then.

You might be looking for the Duke of Saxe-Meinigen.
Before him there really was no figure in theatre who equates with the modern concept of a director.
He funded and produced theatrical works and at the same time he held himself aloof from performing with the express purpose of guiding the production.

A good reference work on theatre would give you more detail. I would recommend "Theatre History," by Allardyce Nichol.

The Duke is 18th Century. Constantin Stanislavski is 19th-20th Century.

I think you're talking about Stanislavski, but you should check on that (both the dates and the spelling...).
