Every country uses propaganda to convince its citizens they are on the right path and that they are the best...it's called patriotism. Therefore a healthy doubt about what we hear from our government is a good thing.
Anthropologists (scientists who study culture) would say that the only way to really understand another culture is to observe it in a scientific way, noting what is seen and what is reported by members of the culture, but to not judge and try to keep your own cultural bias out of your observations. While we can't be anthropologists, we can try to look at cultures without pre-judging and with an open mind.

There is something to be said for getting objective information but experience itself is so subjective that even having been to a country does not give a person a right to believe anything about it.
