"Hotel California is an allegory about hedonism and greed in Southern California in the 1970s. At the time of its release, the Eagles were riding high in the music world, experiencing material success on a frightening level. Though they thoroughly enjoyed the money, drugs, and women fame threw their way, they were disquieted by it all and sought to pour that sense of unease into their music and to warn others about the dark underside of such adulation."

Hotel California was performed by the Eagles... This hotel must have been a memorable place for the band when they were doing a tour...lol.. what could possibly happen in a hotel room? LoL... Some songs remain as mysteries... that's what makes them famous.

Hmm.. I'm quite sure it involves a lone traveler finding a place that might not even exist.. maybe it does in his head.. but once he enters that state of mind he can't really seem to get out. I also think it involves sex.. he might have been on some good drugs too.. not sure.. maybe in some way... hmm.. lol I LOVE the song and is one of my faves!!! Maybe i'll get a for sure answer when you do :) *hugz*

...OR I can be completely wrong.. either way the song rocks!

The song is about Janis Joplin's addiction to heroin, particularly as a symbol of California's decadence in the late 60's/early 70's. She later died of a combination of heroin and alcohol in a hotel in Hollywood. All the imagery in the song relates to heroin use:

"They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" refers to intravenous drug use and how you can never do enough to quell the addiction.

"She said we are all just prisoners here, of our own device" is pretty obvious: They've become prisoners of addiction.

"She's got the Mercedes Bends" is a reference to Joplin's "Mercedes Benz"

"She's got a lot of pretty pretty boys that she calls friends" refers to Joplin constantly having an entourage of guys.

It's about the dark path down drug addiction. Stuff like "you can never leave". you know starts all happy and then spirals downward.
