The holy grail was reputed to be, as written of in dark ages and middle ages beliefs the cup that Chrsit drank from at the last supper. It was believed that drinking from this vessel would bestow knowedge, wsidom, strength, vitality and long life upon the person that drank from it.

The Celtic Item (impressed that someone is actually aware of that varient of the grail's origin) was supposed to be the mythological Cauldron of the goddess Cerridwin which was said to restore the dead to life and grant nigh immortailty and widom to any that drank from it.

Do some research online...just type 'celtic holy grail' (no quotes) into your search engine.

"The grail legend may have been inspired by classical and Celtic stories of magic cauldrons and horns of plenty. "

the holy grail is the result of hand-copying of texts and an interesting mistake.

The phrase in the original manuscript (in Latin) was "sanc real" or holy blood, a consonent got accidentally moved in the copy to be "san greal", which doesn't make much sense so the copy editor changed it to "san graal" or holy grail.

Those who were involved believed that there was a family of people destined to be the best kings of Europe and who were descended from Yeshua bar Yoseph (thus having holy blood), and decided to communicate with each other in Arthurian Romances to hide their real intent.
