2001 Oldsmobile Aurora 3.5 L suddenly makes a whinning noise when shifting into 3rd gear, but when easing off gas it goes away and then on return on pressing gas it comes back. Wondering could it be serious transmission work or just in need of a flush and filter? Any thoughts?

If you shift into 4th does the noise go away. Does it happen more at a speed or as it shift. Reason I ask is had a cust complain about the same thing. Turn out to be her left front wheel bearing. Easy to check for get the noise to happen now gently sway the car from left to right and back again . Did the noise seem to go away a t one turn or the other? If so it s a wheel bearing if not it maybe low fluid in the trans or third gear is starting to go. Good luck hope I helped

P.S. these cars were also bad for the tires making a rubbing noise on the rim a dealer or tire shop should be able to diag this trouble reason I say this is it can give the same sound as the bearing would
