People are born with the capacity to get it or not. People don't just wake up one day and decide to be anorexic/bulimic- its not a conscious choice. Some outside factors- needing control, needing to be pretty, although its more of a dysmorohia, etc... Despite what people say about influences in the media, it is not like someone decides to look like Nicole Richie because she is famous, it is more that she is the goal/a representation of what they want to embody.
You could try going to livejournal, and then typing in either pro-anorexia or famishment, although it might have a lot of trolls, or you might get flamed, although they could explain it much better than yahoo answers, especially if you ask nicely.
hope this helps

As a recovered bulimic, I can offer you an honest answer. People who have an eating disorder, usually suffer from depression as well. It is also a body image, thing. How ever you view your self is how you respond. A positive body image, would be accepting your body at face value. And loving it. Where as a poor body image would be you weighing 110 pounds, and thinking you weigh 250. So just keep that in mind, when you go to look at yourself in the mirror learn to accept your body.

Hope this helped you

it comes from low self-esteem. though the media does contribute to the growing levels of anorexia and bulimia, it is not the only cause, as eating disorders have been around since the middle ages. if people are overweight to begin with, then dieting and exercising excessively can also become an obsession.

The people that usually become anorexic, were already skinny. They felt that they were too fat, when they weren't.... they were already underweight comparing to the millions of people in America. And they thought, "Oh I'm too fat" and lost weight that they shouldn't.... thusly becoming anorexic.

When people feel like they have no control over their lives they take control by not eating, or by not eating and then binging and purging/exercising/taking laxatives. Food is the one thing in their lives they can control

It actually generally has very little to do with appearance and more to do with being disempowered.

This is cause they r obsessed with themselves to such extent that they get that inward compulsion which makes them bulimic and/or anorexic. They have this sense of dissatisfaction with themselves or say a inferiority complex

any number of reasons.... from as simple as stress to as serious as bad depression or abuse. i was anorexic in the 9th grade. i did it because i had a lot of really bad family problems and i was so depressed and desperate for attention/love that i did that to get noticed.

because they have low self-esteem and because they see these skinny models and hear what the perfect body should look like and they want to look that way and they think they will feel better about themselves.

Its hard to explain. It's a neverending need to be pretty, no matter what friends and family tell you about yourself. No compliments make you feel better about yourself.
