You need to find out what the code(s) is. It sounds like it's going to be something crucial related to the way the ECM performs fuel management. I would guess with the major loss in gas mileage, it's possibly the MAF or upstream O2. Usually you won't get a MAF specific code, but shows up as a Lean Bank1 & Bank2 codes or P0171 & P0174 codes. If you have the 4cyl, forget the lean bank1 & 2 comments. With a 2003, if there wasn't much work performed under the hood, I couldn't see it being a vacuum leak, but a dirty MAF wouldn't shock me. Talk to a mechanic! I have got a 2000 GrandAm ....check engine light stays on all the time. Nothing seems to be wrong though.

Go to an Autozone or other store and have them scan your car codes (Autozone free) to see which sensor(s) are giving you problems.
