My ex has possession of the children on weekends and Thursday from the time they get out of school until 8:00pm. Notwithstanding the weekend and Thursday possession of Mr. X, Mrs. X and Mr.X shall have the right to possesion of the child as follows: Christmas..Mr. X shall have possession of the child beginning at 6:00 pm on the day the child is dismissed from school for the holidays.......
Thursday my children get out of school early at 1:00. When should my ex take possession?

Thanks!

It means that the 'usual' schedule of 'weekend and Thursday' does not apply in the special case of the Christmas holiday. Instead, the special conditions apply.

If Thursday 1pm is the start of the children's holiday, then your ex should take possession at 6pm; you have custody prior to 6pm even though it's Thursday and the usual Thursday rules are that your ex has the children from when they get out of school.

Generally, when you see 'notwithstanding' in a legal paper, it's telling you 'notwithstanding the usual way of doing something, in this particular case you do something different.'

That means the normal weekend/Thursday visitation doesn't affect the special visitations set out below that clause.
