chess was invented in 204bc by chinese milatary leader Han Xin according to yahoo chess under "how to play" then "chess history"
i dont know conclusively which game was invented first
but 204bc was a looooooooooooooooooooong time ago!
probably chess lol

The origins of both games are hazy and subject to debate but The Boardgame Book by R. C. Bell (a gaming historian of renown) 1979 The Knapp Press puts the origin of Chess at tenth century India and Checkers at eleventh century France. Note that both games have changed since those dates and different sources will quote different dates.

Checkers, though it was originally called draughts. Chess only came around during the second half of the 15th century so it's still relatively new.
